Kick Your Diet into Overdrive with SculpSure®!

With those winter holidays right around the corner, now is usually the time we begin contemplating that holiday diet.

For many, the days after Thanksgiving are usually filled with thoughts of diet and exercise. Perhaps it was the second helping of the delicious sweet-potato casserole your cousin always brings that spurred these thoughts. Whatever that motivating factor is, staying motivated through the thick and thin of a diet is not easy. But thanks to SculpSure®, help is here!

You might be asking, “What is SculpSure®, and how can it help?” SculpSure® is a recent FDA-approved treatment for the non-surgical, permanent reduction of fat cells using innovative laser technology. In just a few 25 minute treatments, SculpSure® can liquefy fat cells in those hard-to-burn fat deposits forever, giving that diet the extra boost you need to feel motivated to the finish!

SculpSure® is generally very well-tolerated, and some people prefer the warm feeling of SculpSure over the cold sensation of “coolsculpting.” Clinical studies have shown that SculpSure can destroy up to 24% of targeted fat deposits in 25 minute treatments, compared to the hour-long cool sculpting treatments.

Looking to slim down for your winter beach vacation? Those embarking on holiday diets are the perfect candidates for SculpSure, and can see maximum results from our laser body sculpting treatments. It takes just a few treatments before results are noticeable. For before and after photos of real patients, be sure to read through our SculpSure treatment page for more information.

Understanding the Power of Vegetables

Everyone has probably heard that you need to “eat your vegetables” because “vegetables are good for you,” at some point in life. Most people also know they should probably eat more vegetables than they presently do. For those that just love veggies and have no problem working them into your daily routine, keep at it! For the rest of us that need that extra bump of motivation to get more veggies into your life, then this article is for you.

When people understand the actual benefits and ways that vegetables work to improve your health, the more likely they are to stick to a greener, healthier diet. In this article, I want to introduce different ways of working vegetables into your diet, in hopes of motivating you to eat green.

The Power of Vegetables

A brief history lesson

Humans have understood the life-giving, nourishing power of vegetables for thousands of years. The word “vegetable” comes from the Latin word “vegetare”, which means animating or to give life. That’s exactly what veggies do, Give Life!

The history of vegetables goes back to the most distant reaches of humankind, back to when hunter-gatherers left Africa and began spreading across the earth. Vegetables have long since been identified as the source of great medicinal and nutritional power. The history of the tomato dates back 2500 years to the people of the ancient Aztec civilization, who understood the value in the plant and integrated it into their medicine and cuisines. Now, this plant is regarded as one of the most popular vegetables on the planet. The incredible history of the Carrot dates back over 5000 years to the fields of Iran and Afghanistan, before spreading through Asia, and eventually turned orange in the European scientific community.

Some Interesting Vegetable Facts

In Dr. William Li’s excellent, and highly worthwhile TEDTalk: Can We Eat to “Starve” Cancer, Dr. Li outlines a group of cancer-fighting dietary sources that contain Antiangiogenic inhibitors, naturally occurring properties that prevent and reduce the growth of blood cells that feed cancers and fat cells. Many of the sources he lists are vegetables that contain naturally high levels of Anitangiogenic inhibitors.

Vegetables contain many beneficial properties that nourish, heal, and strengthen our bodies. Here’s just a few interesting vegetable facts:

Asparagus is one of the best foods to eat for detoxification and can also help with arthritis and rheumatism.

Avocados are one of the healthiest sources of fat available. They contain loads of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and protein. Eating avocados can help improve blood cholesterol, and can even help you lose weight despite containing fat!

Beets are great for healing the liver and break down fat deposits.

Carrots contain beta-carotene which is converted into vitamin A by our bodies, and is non-toxic unlike the synthetic vitamin A. They have also been shown to reduce the risk of heart attacks, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer.

Cooked tomatoes contain high amounts of phytonutrient lycopene which is a cancer fighting agent.

Cruciferous veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, kale, and radishes are powerful cancer fighters, help your body burn fat deposits, detoxify the liver, and keep high blood pressure in check.

Garlic has been shown to reduce risk of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, colon cancer, heart disease, and stroke. Garlic also has antibacterial and antiviral abilities, so it is a great remedy for many common infections and colds.

Onions have been shown to significantly lower blood sugar levels in diabetics, and can also help to lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and prevent blood clots and strokes. They have also been shown to stop tumor growth!

Red bell peppers are actually ripe green bell peppers, and contain high amounts of vitamin C, beta-caratene, B vitamins, and cancer-fighting lycopene.

How to Eat More Vegetables

There are other ways to eat veggies besides the usual raw or cooked. With all the new juicing equipment out there, it’s easy and fun to watch veggies get pulverized into fresh, healthy and vitamin-rich juice. Adding in fruits adds complex sugars and flavors that can help make your juicing concoctions more palatable.

When juicing, be sure to buy organic produce, especially when juicing fruit or veggies with the skin. Washing vegetables is also important, especially when using non-organic produce. There are some great natural vegetable washes available on Amazon that contain natural substances that do a good job at removing pesticides, chemicals, and dirt.

There are some dehydrated and powdered vegetable concentrates out there, that when mixed with water provide a quick and easy way to meet your daily veggie quota. This is great for traveling and other times when bringing fresh veggies is not convenient or possible. Just add water, and you have yourself a healthy, vitamin rich smoothie. Be sure to look for the organic varieties, it makes a big difference.

Another great tip is to keep raw veggies sliced and available for eating. I find that when veggies are washed and cut, I’m much more likely to grab a handful here and there throughout the day. And really, I would much rather be snacking on some fresh veggies than potato chips or other junk food. The easier I can make eating vegetables, the more likely I will choose veggies over other less-healthy options.

Hopefully I’ve inspired you to consider incorporating more vegetables into your diet. With increasing cancer and obesity rates, it’s important for everyone to do what they can to defend their bodies from disease, and it all starts with the food you eat. We’ll be posting some great recipes soon in an upcoming article, so stay posted!

Healthy Skin: The Secret of an Ageless Wonder

Most people overlook the important role that healthy skin plays in our overall well-being. Skin is our body’s largest organ, and in addition to protecting our internal organs from harm, skin functions as a filter of sorts, taking in oxygen and expelling toxins in the form of sweat.

In fact, recent studies show that our skin breathes in oxygen, penetrating nearly half a millimeter under the skin, which is much farther than previously thought. We all watch our fingers turn into prunes as we soak in the bathtub. That same process happens to a much lower extent with air as well. It’s this exchange of oxygen and toxins that promotes good overall health, and can help with skin conditions like rashes and eczema.

Sweating Is Good For The Skin

Over the years, sweat has been given a bad connotation, and products like antiperspirants physically block your pores from releasing sweat have gained popularity. Yes, smelling like you just spent the last 2 days running a marathon is not very kind to those around you. However, regularly working up a healthy natural sweat is very good in keeping your skin looking and feeling it’s best. Saunas and Steam Rooms are great sweat inducers, but also getting out for a brisk walk can really open the pores and flush out those toxins.

When you are ready, give us a call at 425-557-4227 and schedule your free consultation with Dr. Van Coevorden.

Will Botox leave me looking frozen and expressionless?

In this day and age, Botox is known for achieving natural looking results, and is an extremely effective anti-aging treatment. But with great power comes great responsibility. An experienced doctor uses “Micro Doses” of Botox that brings natural youth and balance back to your face. It’s been proven that over-expressive areas of the face can lead to early wrinkles, in the forehead, frown lines, chin, and crows feet. In the hands of an experienced professional like Dr. Van Coevorden, Botox is administered carefully and accurately in order to achieve natural youthful results.

What is Botox?

Over the years, the word ‘Botox’ has been synonymous with ‘scary’ due to a few extreme use cases that have been over-popularized. The truth is, there are many cases of wonderful Botox success stories that hardly get noticed. Part of Botox’s negative connotation is that it is a neurotoxin that paralyzes muscles, but over the last 30 years it has been proven to be the perfect anti-aging friend.

Botox is the most popular of 4 major brands of reliable US-made neurotoxins. The others include Myobloc by Solstice Neuroscience, Dysport by Ipsen Ltd., and Xeomin by Merz. They all work to relax muscles around the targeted area and have been declared safe for use by the FDA and European counterparts.

Aside from the popular US brands, there are Chinese and Korean variants flooding the market lately. These brands can give the same results, but their manufacturing process is not regulated like it is for Botox and the others in the USA. Because of this, you can never be too sure as to how the proteins were purified. The side effects of the off-brands can be unpredictable, so we do not recommend using any products that were not manufactured in the USA.

Also, it’s important to remember that Botox is not a filler like Juvederm or Radiesse. Botox relaxes muscles, and cannot plump up volume like fillers do.

What is treatment like?

Botox treatment is very simple, and goes something like this: Dr. Van Coevorden will consult with you and ask you to animate your face in different expressions. This would include smiling, frowning, scrunching, whistling, all sorts of faces. After a complete assessment of your treatment goals and musculoskeleture of your facial areas, Dr. Van Coevorden will discuss with you the crucial areas of treatment, and will work with you to draw up a completely customized treatment plan.

Once the treatment plan has been decided, Dr. Van Coevorden will clean the treatment area and apply a topical numbing cream to the area. A tiny needle, smaller than most, is used to inject the proper dosage into the underlying muscles of the treatment area. Total procedure takes anywhere from 20-40 minutes.

Is treatment painful?

With the use of numbing cream, most patients tolerate the micro needle pricks very easily. When delivered into the skin, Botox can create a slight burning and pressure sensation. Most describe it to be uncomfortable, but not painful. With regular treatments, the numbing cream may or may not be needed, some patients are so used to the injections that they do not require numbing cream.

What are the common side effects?

In expert hands, the side effects of Botox treatment are minimal. Immediately following treatment, injection sites look like tiny mosquito bites which disappear naturally within 20-30 minutes. Like any injectable, there is a slight risk of bruising, which if it happens, usually clears up within 4-5 days. To minimize bruising, it’s best to avoid all types of blood-thinners like aspirin, ibuprofen, Vitamin E, Fish Oil supplements, grean tea, ginger, etc. before any Botox treatment.

If applied improperly to the wrong anatomical zones, Botox can cause lid lag or drooping eyelid. This can also result in eyebrow drop and sometimes facial asymmetry. Botox should only be administered by an expert healthcare professional with in-depth knowledge of facial anatomy.

How long does Botox treatment last?

This is quite a popular question, and the answer varies patient to patient. In general, the Botox protein remains between the nerve endings and muscle tissue for 3-5 months. Some people are fast-metabolizers, and will start to see muscle movement returning in about 3 months. Slow metabolizers will see movement returning in about 5 months. Generally, those who regularly receive Botox treatments tend to see the results last longer.

What is autoimmune resistance to Botox?

Very rarely (about 1 in 10,000 cases), patients develop an autoimmune response to botox. Your body essentially forms an antibody response to the Botox protein rendering it ineffective. If you do have a resistance to Botox, there are other forms of Botulinum toxin that can be used.

Other failures of Botox can result from improper injection technique or storage. Botox, if previously opened, stored improperly or mixed incorrectly can cause the fragile Botox protein to break down and lose it’s effectiveness. Also, an inadequate dosage can result in treatment failure. These failures can be avoided by a properly trained Botox professional.

How much does Botox treatment cost?

Every patient is different, and no two treatment plans are the same. However, the price of Botox usually ranges between $10-$16 per unit. The number of units required for each treatment plan varies, as there is no one-size-fits-all approach to Botox treatment.

The number of areas requiring treatment affects the overall cost of Botox. Like we say, there are no two patients who are exactly alike. Dr. Van Coevorden will work with you to develop your own personal treatment plan that works for you and fits your budget.

Also, a treatment performed by a trained Botox expert experienced in Aesthetic and Cosmetic procedures will cost more than a procedure performed by a novice. With treatments like Botox, it is important that you develop a trusting relationship with your provider. Dr. Reinier Van Coevorden has over 20 years of experience dedicated to helping patients achieve their personal goals.

Can’t I just get Botox at my Beauty Salon?

NO! Botox is a powerful prescription drug that should only be administered by a health care professional. Doctors who specialize in Aesthetic Medicine have the most experience and provide the best results.

How young is too young for Botox?

This question comes up very often, but was recently posed at the Antiaging World Congress in Monte Carlo. The consensus was definitely not in teenagers or children unless there is a demonstrated medical need.

While there is no ‘ideal’ age for starting Botox treatment, people as young as their late 20’s are using Botox for preventative goals. Young people use botox to prevent wrinkles as they age. As you get older, your priorities shift from prevention to wrinkle management and anti-aging treatments.

What else is Botox used for?

In addition to it’s anti-aging benefits, more and more treatments have been emerging, and now there are more than 27 approved uses by health regulators in 88 countries. Botox is used in ophthalmology, urology, neurology and dermatology. It works for treatments like migraines, lock-jaw treatments and even excessive sweating in arm pits, hands and feet.

New off-label uses are being discovered and reported more and more frequently, and the medical future of Botox is very promising as advancements in science and technology continue.

Is SculpSure Better than Coolsculpting?

Each year brings new technology to the non-invasive Fat Reduction industry, giving patients even more choices to reach their personal Body Sculpting goals. At RVC Medical, we are always excited to see new equipment and treatments emerge that improve the lives of our patients. That’s why we’re so excited about SculpSure, the non-invasive “Hot Sculpting” fat reduction treatment.

What is “CoolSculpting”?

CoolSculpting is a popular type of non-invasive fat reduction treatment that uses temperature, cool temperature, to “freeze” fat cells. A suction applicator draws tissue into the device where the fat cells are frozen. These frozen cells are dead, and naturally flushed from the body. CoolSculpsure can tend to feel “cold” and treatments are long.

SculpSure - The Breakthrough Non-Invasive Laser Body Sculpting TreatmentWhat is SculpSure?

SculpSure, like Coolsculpting, uses temperature to destroy fat cells. The difference is that SculpSure uses heat to “melt” the fat cells, hence the term “Hot Sculpting”. Results from SculpSure usually blend into untreated areas more smoothly as heat dissipates more evenly from treated to untreated areas.

One main advantage SculpSure has over CoolSculpting is the length of treatment. CoolSculpting treatment usually takes 60 minutes, versus SculpSure’s 25 minute treatments.

Although informative, this article is not a substitute for a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Van Coevorden. Call us today at 425-557-4227 to schedule your free consultation and plan your personalized SculpSure treatments.

SculpSure, the new alternative to “CoolSculpting”

Most of us are aware of “Coolsculpting”, a process of reducing fat by freezing it under the skin. But many don’t enjoy the cooling sensation they experience during hour-long treatment. Well, good news! RVC Medical now offers the revolutionary “Hot Sculpting” treatment SculpSure!

SculpSure works by melting fat under the skin using advanced non-surgical laser technology. No cuts, no bruising, no pain, just a warming sensation around the targeted area. You can see noticeable results after a few treatments, and with zero downtime! In fact, many patients have the treatment performed during their lunch break, and return right back to work immediately after.

In fact, SculpSure treatments are much shorter than Coolsculpting treatments. Just 25 minutes and you’re out the door, moving on with your day. Compare that to the hour-long Coolsculpting treatments, it’s no wonder people are making the switch over to SculpSure.

Call us today at 425-557-4227 to meet with Dr. Van Coevorden and get started on building your very own Body Sculpting treatment plan!
